What they say and what it means

Finally, Aussie terms and words interpreted. At least this is what I understand them to mean. I could be thinking I know and really not get it...


How ya going? How are you?
G'day mate As it sounds, Hello, Good day to you.
Love A term some use to address people.... and not just people they know.
No worries As it says, no worries. Very commonly used. So ya, don't worry.
Heaps Lots. And lots and lots. For example, "There were heaps of people at the shops today" Oh ya, and there's another one. Businesses where we buy things (that we often call stores or malls, are called shops.)
Your Tops You're the best, you're super.
I'm busting I need to go to the bathroom. Or in their words, I need to visit the Loo (found later in the list)
Wind Gas, or in other words, farting.
Hot Air Farts again.
Bodgy Not good, poor condition. Not up to standard. How do I explain that one...
Fair Go Fair deal, fair try, fair competition.
Good Onya Good going. Or good job.
Bring a Plate A potluck term. It's not bring a dish here, it's bring a plate. Funny because some have thought it just meant to bring your own plate to eat.

Names of Things:
Lie Eli's friend calls him Lie. They shorten any name they can here. Mary Alice's year one teacher was "Hamil" instead of Miss Hamilton, I am Di and Mary Alice is often just Mary.
Long Drop Dunny or just Dunny Out house or you know, those smelly outside toilets.
Loo Toilet
Blue metal Road Scrap, from tearing up a road.
Bonnet The hood of a car.
Boot The trunk of a car.
Brelly Unbrella (one of those shortened names)

Jakob's Broken Leg

WHAT?!

 On the 16th of February, we had a little accident at our house.

One of Jakob's big brother's tripped while coming down the stairs. As he fell down, he fell into the baby gate I had just put up to keep Jakob off the stairs ealier that week. The baby gate slammed into Jakob, who was standing at the bottom of the stairs with hands on the last stair looking up at big brother. The gate ended up on top of a flattened Jakob with a portion of big brother on top....

 We had to tell it at least 3 times at the hospital. Big brother was very upset and in sad tears when we all realized that Jakob was more seriously hurt than we would like. He screamed pain for a good 30 minutes after mom's efforts to console and see what could be hurting him so much. She noticed he was not moving his left leg. Then he screamed worse when she squoze it and when she stood him up to see if he would stand on it.... not good. So, she called dad who was at the evening Saturday session of stake conference, no answer... sent him a text to come now because Jakob was hurt. Kids, mom and crying Jakob got into car, Big brother sent another text to dad telling him to meet us at hospital. Jakob fell asleep on the way (he was ready for bed and sleep before accident). Met Dad and another brother at hospital. They gave a blessing to Jakob in the parking lot, then Jakob and his mother and father entered the ER at the local children's hospital and our friend took the kids home.

After 2 hours in the ER, Jakob got treated....

 

Both the tibia and fibula had a fracture. Mom and dad were told to keep him off the injured leg - no crawling, standing, or walking (he was beginning to walk, his furthest walk earlier that day had been about 6 feet). Ha, ha ha... have you ever tried to slow down a 9 month old baby? Especially one who is trying to catch up to those other big kids in his house? Sunday was all right, I had lots of help. 

But on Monday.... 

I got a lot of these looks:

It was very frustrating and exhausting for mom and Jakob. AND, the first few night he didn't sleep so well either. I felt like I had a newborn all over again.  I was very tired. 

 Thankfully, there was a super big brother who gave Jakob extra special care for mom and Jakob. He made sure Jakob was happy and that he didn't do too much.

 

Jakob loves him for that. 

By Wednesday, mom was more than very tired, and gave up on at least the crawling part. Jakob became good at dragging his leg along. The second week, after a check up and new xray on the injury, Jakob could do as he wished the doctor said. So he could do all the things he had been doing before if he wanted to, only he was a little hindered. That cast was bulky, heavy and slippery on the tile floor and mom would not let him play outside in the dirt.

Jakob found that the cast was a good teething aid, and that it made a nice banging/clanky noise when he bumped it on the floor and other things. Not so bad after all.... 

   

And mom got good at cleaning out those toes, which helped it not be quite so smelly. 

 

Then on Wednesday, we went for another checkup...

and came home without a cast. 2 1/2 weeks. That's it. 

Wednesday his leg seemed a little sensitive and stiff, thursday it was better, and today I found him standing all by himself again and thinking about taking a step. Hopefully all is well and completely healed.
